Frequently asked questions
Don't see your question? Email derby@peerleaderscitrus.com.
Who can race?
Kids and teens ages 7–18 on race day. Divisions are set by age so racers compete against others their size and speed. Peer leaders (student mentors) race in their own division.
Do we have to build the car ourselves?
That is the whole point! Racers build with a parent, guardian, or peer-leader mentor. We run build days before the race where tools, help, and some materials are available. Pre-built store cars are allowed only in the Rookie division.
How much does it cost?
Registration is free thanks to our sponsors. You cover materials for your car. A kit list and a low-cost build guide are available from the program.
What does my racer need on race day?
A helmet, closed-toe shoes, long pants, a shirt with sleeves, water, sunscreen, and a completed waiver (signed on this site). Bring the car and any tools for last-minute fixes.
How are races timed?
Infrared gates at the start ramp and finish line send times to this website automatically, so results post live within seconds of a car crossing the line.
Where do we park and unload?
See the Maps page. Trailers and cars unload at the staging entrance; everyone else parks in the main lot and walks to the spectator area.
Can parents help during the race?
One adult handler per racer may walk the car to staging and be at the top of the ramp. Everyone else watches from the spectator area. If you want to be closer to the action, sign up as a volunteer.
Will the race be live-streamed?
Yes. The Watch Live page on this site streams race day, and we post highlights to the program's social media. If you do not want your child shown, uncheck the media release when you sign the waiver.
What if it rains?
Light rain: we race. Lightning or heavy rain: we hold and announce the plan here and on social media. A rain date will be posted if the event is called.
How do I become a peer leader or volunteer?
Fill out the Volunteer page. Peer leaders are students who mentor younger builders; adult volunteers staff registration, tech inspection, staging, the start ramp, the finish line, and crowd safety.
